How To Retrain Breathing Habits

Did you hear about retraining breathing habits from Diary Of A CEO with Steven Bartlett & James Nestor?

Thanks to Steven Bartlett’s interest in breathing and breathwork, The Diary Of A CEO has finally produced an episode on breathing habits and the importance of breathing retraining. James Nestor, a journalist, is considered a breathing expert having researched and written the book ‘Breath’.

I am hugely grateful to James Nestor for the work he is also doing raising awareness on the issue of unhealthy breathing habits. This episode “The Breathing Expert: Mouth Breathing Linked To ADHD, Diabetes & Child Sickness!” is really insightful and provides really crucial education, regardless of what you think to the title.

If you haven’t watched this episode or read his book Breath, I’d recommend it. If you’d like more accessible drip-fed education, feel free to connect with me (Jane Tarrant) on LinkedIn. I’m a Breathing Retrainer and Healthy Breathing Habit Educator.

What breathing habits should I retrain?

The most common breathing habits to retrain are:

  • mouth breathing

  • snoring

  • shallow upper chest breathing

  • lower belly bloating

  • sport breathing where ribs lift rather than expand at the base of the lungs

  • over-breathing (too much breath for the scenario - e.g. fast, loud, shallow or big)

Who can help me retrain breathing habits?

As a healthy breathing habit educator, I , Jane Tarrant, love leaving audiences with simple tips to help retrain breathing habits. For many people this is enough to make a substantial difference to their lives and I regularly get messages letting me know of the progress audience members have made.

If you haven’t heard of me, I’m known for teaching the ‘G-spots’ of breathing, although I drop this particular fun element when working with families. Regardless of delivery method, focus on the N-spot, D-spot and R-spots. Family coaching is aided by the storybook of Rose Loses Her Nose, a fun storybook providing healthy breathing education, written by myself, Jane Tarrant. I saw there was a need to educate children, but there weren’t resources I felt were effective, accessible and fun.

What if I need coaching and support with retraining my breathing habits?

For some people, having their hand held through the process of breathing retraining is crucial. Whether it is for accountability, methods which make it more accessible, support with mental blocks when approaching breathing tweaks, advice when it feels strange or difficult or reassurance when it feels new or unsettling to breathe differently.

I provide all this support and more.

Having developed a step by step process to support a range of over-breathers, I help clients either 1-2-1, as a family or via a more affordable online course which educates via short professionally filmed videos, supported for as long as needed by group calls where I can provide tailored support and accountability to a (usually small) group.
